The IFT is a research institute in Munich with a main focus on substance use disorders (alcohol, illicit drugs, pharmaceuticals and tobacco), pathological gambling, adiposity and eating disorders. The emphasis of the two research departments is on basic and applied research related questions in the field of epidemiology and prevention / treatment on several levels (cognitive-affective, behavioural and psychosocial analysis).

Furthermore, to improve public health care, the IFT transfers regularly the latest scientific results by newsletters, numerous data monitoring systems as well as by an extensive education and training programme.
